Who's Your Oracle?

The other day I was talking to a member at the health club I just joined. (Never had spare time when I was working for someone else.) We started having a conversation about our personal trainers. If you aren't familiar with the word, these are fitness professionals who have learned to design work-out routines based on personal strengths, needs and goals.

In any case, Rick said something that struck me right in the middle of my eyes. "I got so overwhelmed reading all the books and fitness magazines. Any one has a different opinion of what rewards the best. I finally figured if I was going to strengthen my fitness, I might as well pick one expert, be attentive to them and put in action their routine."

Later, as I was driving my sore body home, I got to think about how appropriate Rick's reply was to internet marketing. Everyone's an expert. (Even people who were unable to sell their first eBook.) And there exist million programs, books, secrets, techniques and strategies that will work for you.

The problem is, you can instantly fall into what my favorite business school professor called, "Analysis Paralysis". That's where a lot of people are having difficulties. They keep reading, and it gets in the way of really work on something.

I was guilty of this, too. I must have purchased several hundred dollars worth of books and courses before I saw what did the job for me, with my own internet business.

Fortunately, the expert I decided to follow was, in hindsight, an outstanding choice. And by listening to his advice and following his ideas, I have designed a couple of thriving income streams.

I'm not telling you that my "guru" is the right one for everyone. The point is to select one or maybe a few people you really appreciate, and model them. Of course, make sure they are truly successful in their own businesses first. But when you find someone you appreciate and whose style you like, listen to their tips and listen to what they suggest in their writings.

Following this strategy can save a lot of brain cells that you would spend shifting strategies and tactics. It avoids mix up and gives you a great point of reference from which to work.

You can lay out the reading and the searching for the newest eBooks. Suppose your guru knows the latest strategies and will advise you of how good they work.

I'm not saying you never read from another eBook or eZine again, it's pretty much that when you have one principle star you watch, it's that much easier to see your way, working from home.
